What a Wonderful, Wonderful World This Could Be

“The future never just happened.  It was created.”  - Mae Jemison, Engineer and former NASA astronaut

My dear friend MaryAnn has always been the Queen of Community. As soon as she learns that someone is experiencing hardship or grieving the loss of a loved one, she springs into action.

Out comes the big stainless-steel pot, and before long she's making her famous Italian wedding soup—complete with homemade meatballs—for the family in need. She understands the power of this simple act of kindness.

She knows that when a community gathers around those who are grieving, it helps the healing process. Her soup provides nourishment, warmth, comfort, and cherished memories, but perhaps most importantly, it reminds people that they are not alone.

It's one reason nearly every culture creates opportunities for people to gather in community, especially around food. 😊

It's All About Community

It occurred to me recently that many of us could use a big metaphorical bowl of nourishing, healing Italian wedding soup right about now.

As we witness political, social, economic, and environmental upheaval—and the unraveling of systems and structures that have shaped our lives for generations—many people are grieving what once was.

We are living through a pivotal moment in human history, and each of us has a choice. We can remain spectators, focused on what is being lost, or we can turn our attention toward the possibility of creating something better.

In my last post, Hey Doom and Gloom: SHUH TUH FUH CUP, I introduced the "Eden Blueprint," describing the qualities people need to cultivate in order for communities to thrive. I focused on the question of who we need to be if we hope to create a more peaceful, harmonious world.

People rooted in kindness and compassion. People who genuinely connect with one another. People who make joy, creativity, learning, growth, and rich life experiences central to their lives. And perhaps most importantly, people who respect and care for the Earth and all its inhabitants, approaching life with wonder, gratitude, and reverence.

The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.  – Bob Marley

Those are certainly the kinds of people I would enjoy being around.

But being a certain way is only part of the equation. It is equally important to consider what we need to do if we want to build an Eden-like society.

The Eden Blueprint, Part 2

Seven Principles for Creating a Wonderful World for All

1. Ensure Every Person Has the Opportunity to Flourish

When people's basic needs are met, they have greater capacity to learn, contribute, create, and thrive. We can build economies that ensure access to life's essentials—clean air and water, nutritious food, shelter, healthcare, and education.

Success should be measured not only by economic output, but by human and planetary well-being. A sustainable and regenerative prosperity can be shared by all.

2. Lead with Wisdom, Transparency, and Stewardship

Create systems of governance that empower citizens, value truth, embrace accountability, and support decisions with future generations in mind.

3. Educate Whole Human Beings

Reimagine education to cultivate emotional intelligence, critical thinking, creativity, cooperation, ecological awareness, and lifelong learning—preparing people not only for work, but for meaningful and fulfilling lives.

4. Restore and Protect the Living Earth

Regenerate forests, oceans, soils, and ecosystems while designing communities that live in harmony with nature. Humanity's future depends upon the health of the planet that sustains us.

5. Celebrate Human Dignity and Belonging

Build cultures where every person belongs, every voice matters, and our differences are recognized as strengths that enrich the human family.

6. Make Peace a Fundamental Human Enterprise

Invest in diplomacy, dialogue, empathy, and conflict resolution so that cooperation becomes stronger than division and peace becomes part of the foundation upon which societies are built.

7. Harness Technology for Human Flourishing

Develop and deploy technology with wisdom and ethical purpose, ensuring that innovation expands opportunity, protects freedom, reduces suffering, and serves the common good.

Certainly, this is an ambitious vision. But ambitious visions have always been the starting point for meaningful progress.

The future we seek is not beyond our reach. It is waiting for us to choose it—and to build it together.

"Action is the antidote to despair" – Joan Baez

A Path of Participatory Optimism

An Eden-like world becomes possible when humanity aligns its economies, institutions, technologies, and cultures with a simple truth: the flourishing of people and the flourishing of our living Earth are inseparable.

This moment presents us with an opportunity to be intentional. We can choose to focus our attention not only on what is broken, but also on what can be rebuilt. Each of us has gifts, talents, perspectives, and experiences that we can contribute to creating a better future.

I guess, truth be told, I’d consider myself a Queen of Community too.  My friends and neighbors know they can depend on me to care for their pets while they’re away; to help them prepare their resume when they need a new job; to regularly check in on the elderly; and to share my pool on hot summer days.  It brings me such great joy to know that I’ve enabled more than a few kids to learn an important life skill - how to swim 🏊‍♀️.

These are just a few personal examples of how one person can have a positive impact simply by sharing their gifts with others and showing up with care.

"What is one gift, talent, or act of kindness you can contribute to the future you'd like to see?"

Hope is found in community.

Across the world, millions of people are already stepping forward—helping neighbors, building solutions, protecting ecosystems, strengthening communities, and imagining new possibilities. When people come together with compassion, purpose, and mutual support, extraordinary things can happen.

“There is a difference between optimism and stupidity. Optimism is the belief that things will get better. Stupidity is the belief that they will get better without any effort on your part.” – Albert Einstein

The path forward will not create itself. It is up to us to help shape it by turning hope into action.

The question is not whether humanity can create a more beautiful, just, and sustainable world. The question is whether we are willing to become the kind of people—and build the kinds of communities—that can.

As members of The Positive People Project, this is right in our wheelhouse. It's time for us to get busy building a positive future worth sharing.

Thank you for being here.

With love and laughter,
