Hope for Humanity
“The future of humanity is in our hands.” - 14th Dalai Lama
I recently saw a sign in a neighbor’s front yard that said, “Humankind. Be both.”
Nowadays, it seems that few of us are witnessing behaviors of humanness or kindness in our day-to-day experiences, which begs the questions: What happened to us humans? What happened to our humanity? How did we allow our world to get so messed up? Is it simply human nature to gravitate toward the negative and become consumed by it? Are humans wired to intentionally cause death and destruction, even in this “enlightened” age of progress and technological advances? Is this it? Are we doomed? Is there any hope for us?
The word “humanity” has two meanings: One refers to human beings as a race, while the other speaks to the traits of kindness, compassion, and being humane toward others. By the latter definition, we haven’t seen much of humanity lately. Thanks to the media, we humans have had a front-row seat to non-stop drama and ranting, untruthful rhetoric filled with meanness and rage, and acts of cruelty on a global scale.
I know I am not alone in feeling utterly exhausted and disheartened by the impact of all the hate and anger we've been flooded with for far too long. The past decade of chaos has eroded part of our collective human soul, to the point that many of us have become unknowingly anesthetized to the bullying, humiliation, and unkindness we see every day.
I believe most of us are watching with justifiable sadness and horror at what is being reported, feeling traumatized and terrorized. As humans, we feel the fight-or-flight instinct in our collective DNA at full throttle. There are some (hopefully a minority) who seem to be okay with all this negative energy, and others who aren’t even paying attention to what’s happening, or have been grossly misinformed.
This seems to represent the wide spectrum of our current humanity. Is this really the best we can be? Should we give up on expecting humanity to be humane? No, I believe the exact opposite.
I am optimistic that only a small percentage of the population is driven by negative forces and seems to revel in the chaos. Our media may present the impression that their numbers are great because they’re the ones making the most noise.
But I know that if we keep focusing on our divisiveness and continue to see each other as enemies, we miss the key element that binds us—the essential truth—that we are all human beings. Granted, some are more enlightened or evolved than others, but I believe that most of us are kind and compassionate people who want to create a positive impact in the world.
Humanity now stands at a crossroads, and each of us is being called to choose whether we want to be a positive or negative influence in the world. I believe most of us are ready to bring “humane” back to humanity.

We are ready to update our Human Operating Systems (HOS)
I propose that we, as humans, are long overdue for a system update. Just as device users must frequently update apps to ensure optimal performance, it’s time for each of us to upgrade our Human Operating System (HOS) to a newer version.
The upgrade features improvements that fix or eliminate the viruses of anger, fear, hatred, and despair. The new HOS version will work much better for humanity, clearing the path for improved access to better health and well-being and enabling a seamless experience as HOS users transition to love, joy, compassion, kindness, and inspiration.
This new version of HOS will also fix files corrupted by malware, which locked users into an endless loop of negativity. It will remove the destructive coding—rage, hate, intolerance, cruelty, and meanness—that has taken root in so many people across the globe. The harmful coding will be replaced with “goodware,” which uploads positive coding. Users who successfully upgrade will learn to attract more positive experiences into their lives.
Clearly, this is a different kind of upgrade from the technical sort. This is an individual, self-inspired process that each of us willfully undertakes.
We have a choice to make. We can stay in the prevailing dense energy of the current collective—a harsh reality of divisiveness and hopelessness—or we can choose to hit the “ACCEPT UPDATE NOW” button and embrace a better, lighter way of being. This new energy will give us the inspiration to be better—both individually and collectively.
Simply put, when our human systems operate in the higher, lighter spectrum of human emotion, we can consciously choose to be humane in the face of life’s more challenging moments. Conversely, if we let our old base HOS code run on autopilot—getting triggered and reacting with adverse emotions to every piece of breaking news—we unknowingly operate in the denser, darker energies on the spectrum of human emotion.
“Be certain that you do not die without having done something wonderful for humanity.” Maya Angelou
As one human being on this Earth, I am ready to do my part and contribute to the whole of humanity. I am ALL IN for the upgrade. And seriously, “What do I/we (humanity) have to lose?” I think we’re ready for better—better than what we have now.
If enough of us dedicate ourselves to this Positive People Project, by purposefully upgrading our humanness and becoming active participants in contributing positivity, we can easily overwrite the bad code and create a better world for all of us.
The people I know and love in my life represent a variety of races, genders, socio-economic backgrounds, and sexual preferences. All are decent, loving, kind people living their lives as best they can. Some are facing significant challenges, some are truly joyful, and many are just trying to get through each day. Because of these people, and so many more, I have great hope for humanity. I bet you do too!
